Solar Terms Are Not the Lunar Calendar: They Measure the Sun, Not the Moon

The 24 solar terms are divided by the sun's movement of 15 degrees along the ecliptic, making their Gregorian dates relatively fixed, such as Qingming always falling between April 4 and 6.

The Calculation Basis of Solar Terms

The definition of the twenty-four solar terms originates from the sun's position on the ecliptic (黃道). The ancients divided the 360 degrees of the sun's orbital path around the celestial sphere into twenty-four points, marking the beginning of a solar term for every fifteen-degree movement. This system tracks the sun and is therefore inherently a product of a "solar calendar" (陽曆).

Because the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the sun once (the tropical year) is approximately 365.2422 days, which is very close to the length of the Gregorian calendar year, the date of each solar term on the Gregorian calendar remains quite stable, typically varying only by a day or two between adjacent dates. For example, the Winter Solstice (冬至) always falls on December 21, 22, or 23 in the Gregorian calendar.

How the Lunar Calendar Operates

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar, on the other hand, is a "lunisolar calendar" (陰陽合曆). Its months follow the moon's phases, from one new moon to the next, known as a "synodic month" (朔望月), with an average length of about 29.53 days. This makes the lunar calendar months a purely lunar concept.

However, purely lunar months would fall out of sync with the seasons. To ensure that the lunar calendar year can keep pace with the cycle of the four seasons, the ancients designed a mechanism for "intercalation" (置閏), adding an extra intercalary month roughly every two to three years to align the average length of the lunar year with the tropical year. Thus, the lunar calendar is a lunisolar calendar, but its "solar" aspect is regulated through intercalary months, not by directly observing the sun's position.

Date Comparison: Qingming is the Best Evidence

When we place these two systems side by side, the difference becomes very clear. Because solar terms follow the sun, while lunar months follow the moon, the same solar term will have a significant variation in its lunar calendar date each year.

Taking Qingming (清明) as an example, it is both a solar term and a traditional festival. Its date is very stable on the Gregorian calendar, always falling between April 4 and 6 each year. However, Qingming's date in the lunar calendar can appear in the second or third month, varying from year to year. This phenomenon is the most intuitive evidence that "solar terms belong to the solar calendar."

Time Periods Calculated from Solar Terms

Many traditional time periods are also calculated directly from solar terms, not lunar calendar dates. The most common examples are the "Three Fu" (三伏) and the "Counting Nines" (數九).

The "Three Fu" refers to the hottest period of summer, and its starting point is the third "Geng day" (庚日) after the Summer Solstice (夏至). This is a method calculated using the Ganzhi (干支) day-counting system combined with the Summer Solstice solar term. The "Counting Nines" begins on the Winter Solstice (冬至) itself, with each "nine" lasting nine days, for a total of eighty-one days, used to calculate the length of the cold winter. Both of these systems demonstrate that in traditional time calculations, solar terms serve as a solar calendar benchmark independent of lunar calendar months.
