Song of the 24 Solar Terms
Spring Rain Awakens Spring, Clear and Grain's Sky; Summer Full, Grain in Ear, Summer, Heat connects. Autumn Cold, Dew, Autumn, Cold and Frost Descent; Winter Snow, Snow, Winter, Minor and Major Cold. Two terms each month, fixed, no change; Mostly one or two days' difference at most. First half-year on the 21st and 6th; Second half-year on the 23rd and 8th.
The first two lines each character corresponds to a solar term, in order: Lichun, Yushui, Jingzhe, Chunfen…; the last two lines describe the pattern of term dates — mostly on the 6th or 21st in the first half of the year, and on the 8th or 23rd in the second half, with only a day or two of variation.
Why Precision to the Minute Matters
In Bazi (Eight Characters) charting, the year and month pillars are demarcated by solar terms, not by the first day of the lunar month or the Western New Year. For someone born on the day of a solar term transition, a difference of a few minutes can result in a different month pillar — and there is no warning if it is miscalculated.
