One Simplified, Many Traditional: Why "丑" Cannot Be Converted to "醜"
When you open a traditional Chinese almanac and see "子醜寅卯," you might not notice anything wrong. This is not a typo, but an inevitable result of character-by-character conversion. The earthly branch "丑" (chǒu) and the character for "ugly," "醜" (chǒu), look identical in Simplified Chinese, but in Traditional Chinese they have always been two distinct characters.
