Sixty-Four Hexagrams

Formed by combining the eight trigrams in pairs, each hexagram has six lines.

The sixty-four hexagrams are formed by pairing the eight basic trigrams (eight trigrams) in all possible combinations, with one placed above and one below. Each six-line hexagram represents a more specific and complex situation or stage of development in a matter. In traditional divination practice, after obtaining a specific hexagram from the sixty-four through a particular divination method, one can analyze and judge the nature, development, and outcome of the queried matter by interpreting the corresponding hexagram text and the line texts for each of its six lines. These sixty-four symbolic combinations constitute a symbolic model encompassing all the myriad changes of heaven, earth, and the myriad things.
