Dong Tu

The first digging to start construction for a yang (residential) building. ⚠️ For tombs, see 'Po Tu'; they are different.

Dong Tu refers to the act of first breaking ground with a hoe to begin construction on a yang house (a dwelling or building for the living). Traditionally, this is an important ritual marking the official start of the project, requiring the selection of an auspicious date and time, along with related ceremonies to pray for a smooth construction process and household peace. Note specifically that this term is used only for starting work on yang houses; for yin houses (tombs), the equivalent action is called 'Po Tu', and the two should not be confused.
