Fēn xiāng is one of the most fundamental practices in religious and ancestral veneration ceremonies. The lit incense is seen as a medium of communication between humans and deities; the rising smoke conveys the devotee's sincerity and prayers to the heavens. It is an indispensable element in household ancestral rites, temple worship, and daily morning and evening prayers.
