Breaking Ground for a Grave (Pò Tǔ)
The ceremonial breaking of ground for the construction or repair of a tomb (yinzhai). ⚠️ For construction involving a dwelling for the living, the term '動土 (Dòng Tǔ)' is used.
This term specifically refers to the initial act of digging earth for the construction or repair of a yinzhai (a tomb or burial site). It is a solemn and ritualistic step, traditionally of great importance. An auspicious date and direction must be carefully selected based on the Tongshu (almanac), accompanied by corresponding rites, to express respect for ancestors and pray for the safety and prosperity of descendants. Please note that this term is exclusively for tomb-related projects; for breaking ground to build a dwelling for the living, the term '動土 (Dòng Tǔ)' should be used instead.
