Xíngsāng (Holding a Funeral)

Holding a funeral ceremony and conducting the burial procession.

Xíngsāng refers to the process of holding the funeral ceremony and conducting the burial procession. It is the climax of the entire mourning activities, involving multiple steps such as moving the coffin and leading the procession. Traditionally, every aspect of the xíngsāng, especially the timing of the burial procession, must be chosen based on auspicious days according to the Tōngshū (almanac), in hopes that the entire process will be smooth and solemn, and to bring comfort and auspicious meanings to the deceased and their family.
