Zao Cangku

Constructing a warehouse was an important economic activity in agricultural societies, related to grain storage and resource management. Traditionally, it was believed that breaking ground on a specific auspicious day would make the warehouse sturdy, protect the stored grain from moisture and decay, and avoid accidents or disasters. Almanacs (tongshu) often recommend selecting this day, reflecting a wish for wealth accumulation and peace. Although modern warehouses differ in form and materials, the practice of choosing a lucky day before groundbreaking remains a custom continued in some places.
